At dawn I drove to the back side of Cathedral Rock. I was stunned by all the wild flowers, and later by the hot-air balloon that briefly touched the top of the rock. This is one of my favorite paintings I have ever completed.

Red Hawk and Snowy Rock Formation at Valley of the Gods. I saw Ernest's photo on Google Maps and quickly requested permission to paint it. He generously shared the original high res photos, including many I hadn't seen. The red hawk was an addition to the painting, in order to add life to the scene. I was amazed with how few brush strokes the hawk required.

Arizona Mountains was painted from a screen capture off a video about camping in Arizona. I embraced the opportunity to paint the secondary-colors, and make a painting with variations on orange, violet, and green.

Valley of the Gods Butte and Ravine. After spending the night in the valley, I raced to photograph the monuments with long shadows and with interesting foreground elements. This is another in that series. This technique feels like one that is determining where my personal painting style is headed.

Valley of the Gods Spire and Ravine. After spending the night in the Valley, I raced to photograph the monuments with long shadows and interesting foreground elements. With this painting, I applied an especially warm/cool color scheme. I painted on linen with a technique that makes my brush almost function like a palette knife. I enjoy using this technique of large blocks of thick strokes with little blending.

Decided I wanted to know what it was like to paint Starry Night. So I painted it almost the exact size of the original, with similar thick brush strokes, however, I used every color from the opposite side of the color wheel. So it's Van Gogh's Starry Night, but not. I called mine Dusty Dawn.

Lighthouse in San Juan islands. Painted in the outline style as a first attempt for a commission. Ultimately the client chose a second version with no black outlines, but I still love the original best. This is called Lime Kiln Lighthouse. The clients had seen whales later that day, and requested the addition of the whale tale. I loved that addition.

I spent a morning from before dawn at Shiprock. It is SO AMAZING! Not sure how I pulled my little teardrop camper there in the dark, because I even had a difficult time getting out in mid-day. This is what I think of as the "other side" of Shiprock. I painted the foreground more hilly and included more vegetation.

Tunnel Road near Canon City from a photo by Si Nayman. I added back in the tunnel which was cropped out of his photo. I felt like it mirrored the moon in negative, and was needed because the rock formation was so expansive.
