Spires and Ravines at Valley of the Gods
Valley of the Gods Spire and Ravine. After spending the night in the Valley, I raced to photograph the monuments with long shadows and interesting foreground elements. With this painting, I applied an especially warm/cool color scheme. I painted on linen with a technique that makes my brush almost function like a palette knife. I enjoy using this technique of large blocks of thick strokes with little blending.

Bluffs
A lot of these paintings started with my teardrop trailer. I will pull it out to places like Shiprock or Valley of the Gods, camp overnight, and be up before dawn chasing the long shadows. Sometimes my Chihuahua comes along. More than once a view has stopped me in my tracks and I have driven home knowing exactly what I am going to paint.
