Red Hawk over Valley of the Gods
Red Hawk and Snowy Rock Formation at Valley of the Gods. I saw Ernest's photo on Google Maps and quickly requested permission to paint it. He generously shared the original high res photos, including many I hadn't seen. The red hawk was an addition to the painting, in order to add life to the scene. I was amazed with how few brush strokes the hawk required.

Bluffs
I do not always paint what was in front of me. I will photograph a dirt road in one place and a creek somewhere else, then merge them into one landscape that never existed. Sometimes I add something that belongs there anyway, like the red hawk at Valley of the Gods, or the elk I snuck into a commission as a surprise for a client.
