Cathedral Rock at Dawn

At dawn I drove to the back side of Cathedral Rock. I was stunned by all the wild flowers, and later by the hot-air balloon that briefly touched the top of the rock. This is one of my favorite paintings I have ever completed.

I love the challenge of building texture. I paint thickly, in large blocks and strokes, sometimes with the brush working almost like a palette knife. On linen it is a blast. Some of these started on a black canvas, so the light shapes are negative-painted rather than laid on top.
